Getting Up and Running
Java
If you’re running games in this, the year 2020, on this, Windows 10, you probably have the appropriate Java version installed, but we are going to make sure, since the launcher does not run without it.
- Head to here: https://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
- Click on Windows Offline (64bit) to download the latest installer .exe
- Run that file!
- After you install, Java gives you the option to uninstall previous versions. Personally I like doing this, but it might cause other programs to break, so you don’t have to.
MCUpdater
The program we actually use to run this version of Minecraft is called MCUpdater. It’s a bit like Technic(Tekkit), but a whole lot more stripped down, which is a good and a bad thing. It takes a bit more setup than Technic, but in the long run is easier to maintain the server. Plus once you get it initially set up it’s dead simple to update and launch.
- Head to here: https://mcupdater.com/
- On the right side, under Links, hit that Download (JAR, Recommended) to download the MCUpdater launcher.
- Chrome/FF will probably give you a warning about downloading it, since .jar files are flagged by default. Click the ‘keep’ or ‘accept’ or whatever pops up.
- This file serves as the launcher for the whole program, it doesn’t really ‘install’ itself. As such, put it somewhere like your desktop where you can get at it.
- Double click that file and let it run! It will probably take a bit the first time.
- Evetually it will spit you out on the default window, looking at the MCUpdater example pack.
- In the upper-left there are three buttons. A green plus (Add Pack URL). a green double arrow (Refresh), and a hard to see grey cog (Settings). Hit the cog to open up the settings. On this first tab (Java), change the Minimum Memory to 3G.
- Change the Maximum Memory to something higher.
- 4G will probably run, but it will be clunky. 6G the minimum for having a good time. You could set this as high as you want, but the higher you set it relative to the max RAM your computer has the less you’ll be able to do at the same time you’re playing, and your whole computer may get laggy
- I say you should set this to be 4 less than however much RAM you have, up to 16G. Giving this program more than 16G probably won’t matter much. 🙂
- Flip over to the next tab (Minecraft), and change any settings you want. This is where you change the defaults for how the game opens. I suggest keeping Automatically Connect, Minimize on Launch, and Minecraft Output to Console selected.
- Hit that OK button!
- Next we’re setting up the server itself. Hit that green plus.
- Copy the following URL, paste it into the text box, then hit OK: https://minecraft.ligerbrand.net/files/LigerServer1_Pack.xml
- The program will probably give you a popup saying that your server is out of date. Just hit okay.
- I don’t remember the flow exactly, but this might also be where it prompts you for your Mojang inforamtion. This is just your normal Minecraft Java Edition username (email) and password. It will save to MCUpdater as a profile, so you don’t have to input it again.
- Honestly it might’ve asked you this already, or it might not do it until you actually try to launch the game. It’ll do it eventually though!
- In the lower-right of the window, hit the Update button. This downloads all of the appropriate mods and puts you in sync with the server. It’ll take a while this first time.
- Along the top of the window, click the “Mods” tab.
- If you want any of the optional mods installed, click the checkbox. This will prevent you from being able to launch the game until you hit the update button. Even if you select then deselect, you’ll have to hit that update.
- After all of that, the Launch Minecraft button in the very bottom-right should finally be available. Click it, and the game will start.
- This always takes a few minutes, even more if your compy is a little slow. But if it works it should put you on the normal 1.12 Minecraft launcher page.
- Hit Multiplayer, the server should be there, and double click it!
- ???
- Gaming Profit!
That’s all there is to it! Every time you open MCUpdater, it pings the pack URL to see if there are any updates. If there are, it’ll tell you and prevent you from playing until you update. Just hit that update button, then when it’s done launch!
